11.30 Climate Change Today

Adam Weymouth journeyed by canoe on a four-month odyssey along the Yukon River, encountering people who have lived there for generations. The Yukon’s inhabitants depend on the king salmon who migrate the entire river to reach their spawning grounds.

Now salmon numbers have dwindled, and the encroachment of the modern world has changed the way of life on the Yukon. Weymouth’s searing portraits of these people and landscapes offer an elegiac glimpse of a disappearing world.

Adam has been awarded the Lonely Planet Adventure Travel Book of the Year 2019 and was the 2018 winner of the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year.

Andrew Holgate (literary editor of the Sunday Times) described his work as combining ‘acute political, personal and ecological understanding, with the most beautiful writing reminiscent of a young Robert Macfarlane …. a significant voice for the future.’

Adam will be in conversation with Martha Dillon, editor of It’s Freezing in LA!, a new independent magazine with a fresh perspective on climate change that provides original, engaging and surprising content.

Join this new generation tackling climate change as they discuss the prize-winning Kings of the Yukon, nature writing, and reflect on the environmental issues we all face.
